Beyond Willpower: The Science of Modern Addiction Treatment
Posted in :
For decades, society viewed addiction as a moral failing—a lack of willpower. Today, Mental Health & Addiction Practice is grounded in the understanding that addiction is a complex brain disorder. As practitioners, our approach must reflect this science.
Effective treatment requires a holistic view. We don’t just treat the substance use; we treat the human being. This means integrating evidence-based practices like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Motivational Interviewing (MI) to address the underlying trauma and behavioral patterns.
It also means understanding the social determinants of health in the Nigerian context—how economic stress, family dynamics, and community stigma impact recovery. As professionals, our job is to create a therapeutic alliance where change is possible, moving the conversation from “what is wrong with you?” to “what happened to you?”
